Happy Programmers

Thursday, March 25th, 2004

I read this on Slashdot, thought it was pretty good:

only 1 in 7 IT professionals rate themselves as “very happy” with their chosen profession- which stands in stark contrast to one in three hairdressers, plumbers and chefs, and one in four florists. But then again, very few plumbers have to deal with users who consistently download BonziBuddy, blindly click on suspicious email attachments and use their cd trays as cupholders.” Of course, it should be noted that by and large IT professionals earn more money then most other jobs – which I suppose is once again a warning of money != happiness.

Plus, a must read: Sports Guys’ Ramblings from the first weekend of the tourney

The Buns Matter!

Monday, March 22nd, 2004

Ever since The Sports Guy started working for Jimmy Kimmel, Page 2 just hasn’t been the same. Today marks the first occasion I can remember that someone has written an article of Sports Guy quality. Evan sent this to me during work today. I’m sure people thought there was something wrong with me as I kept cracking up. I give you The 999.

Another good link I found last week that I almost forgot about comes courtesy of Sports Pickle, my favorite sports satire site (I am unaware of the existance of any others). Here is Sports Pickle’s tournament for who is going to win your office pool.

Tourney Time

Sunday, March 21st, 2004

The first weekend of the tourney is done and I’m sitting in a comfortable 3rd place in the pool I’m in. Plus, I’m the only one left with all my Final Four teams left. I’ve only lost Maryland and Kentucky from my Elite Eight. I’m able to live with the Kentucky loss since so many people had them in the Final Four, plus it was the most exciting game of the first two rounds.

I think every year back to the first tourneys that I remember. Back before the internet and continuous bottom line. Every year on Selection Sunday I would scour the house for graph paper to make my brackets in time so that I was ready to fill them in. They always said them so fast that I couldn’t write them all down. Then when the games started and they would only occasionally update the score, instead of the constant updates, and I would miss some and my Mom was supposed to catch them for me but she would drop the ball. Now its all about the picks and thinking that since you followed the NCAA pretty well this year the picks should be no problem. Then you lose a Final Four team or two the first weekend and want to kill yourself. I can’t really say which time I like better, but the first one doesn’t happen anymore.

I’ve got my Spring Break pictures formatted and just got Evan’s so I will have to format his then work on the write up, shouldn’t be much longer now.

Farewell Vet

Saturday, March 20th, 2004

The Vet is going to be imploded tomorrow. A very sad day in my opinion. It seems that just about everyone is excited to see the eyesore disappear and to move into the new homes. But it just won’t be the same. I went to the Linc this year, the place is amazing, nice, clean, new. Not where the Eagles should be playing. The Cit will be just as amazing I’m sure. But the Vet is the only place I’ve ever known for the Phillies. Here are some Vet memories of games and events I’ve been to (or missed).

1993 NLCS Game 6, Phillies beat Braves to go to the World Series

1996 All – Star Game

1996 Home Run Derby

Winter Carnivals and ALS Autograph/Auctions

Eagles vs. Cardinals, I don’t remember the year but it was the only Eagles game I saw at the Vet, it was Buddy Ryan’s first game back as coach of another team.

Having tickets to see Terry Mulholland’s no hitter in 1990 but not being able to go because of my Dad’s 40th birthday party.

A ton of Sunday afternoon games.

Countless number of games with Ben.

Hating that Darren Daulton hit a HR at every game I went to, my least favorite Phillie

Phillie Phanatic

Dave Lyon’s birthday party on fireworks night, Evan and I were unaware it was a birthday party until we got in the car to go.

I don’t remember my first Phillies game, I was probably really young.

Last game was this past summer with Evan against the Cardinals.

I’ll post this in the forum and you can share your Vet moments. I’ll add any more I think of. There are so many.

If you know anything about how long I usually take to get pictures up after a trip then you shouldn’t be holding your breath for these Spring Break pictures. You shouldn’t be excited anyway, it’s the same stuff as last year. That means the important stuff is my recap/summary and that is going to take a while.

Spring Break Preview

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2004

I know you’ve all been waiting anxiously for me to announce the final Spring Break agenda, well, here goes. This is a very quick overview. To find out exactly what we did you will have to wait for the full wrap-up. Which, based on prior events, should be done around December.

Sunday – Depart Rochester, stop-over in Chicago, Orlando, let ears adjust to sea level.

Monday – Indians vs. Braves, Disney; Celebration Softball

Tuesday – Twins vs. Phillies, Clearwater; this may be the end of the trip since the Phillies brain trust decided to build the stadium at the most dangerous intersection in Florida. I’ve seen Florida traffic, and if this is the most dangerous, no one is getting out alive.

Wednesday – Indians vs. Tigers, Lakeland; Phillies vs. Braves, Disney

Thursday – Walt Disney World on a Hopper Pass

Friday – Brown vs. Florida, Gainesville

Saturday – Depart Orlando, stop-overs in Miami and Chicago, Rochester, recover.

Add Ons/Possibilities: Universal, Movie (Girl Next Door), Bahama Breeze, Beach
