Friday there was an exec speaker over in my old building. Afterwards I hung out for a bit with Monika, Luke, and Aju. It had been a month since I’d been there to hang out. I miss it. Its so great to just sit back and talk about whatever random crap pops into your head. I had seen everyone on Monday at lunch but lunch is an entirely different animal. You have to eat, there are all sorts of other people making noise, you don’t want to offend any of these other people, and you need to get back to the office so it doesn’t throw off the schedule for the week.

Aju asked me if the full-time MBA plan was still my current life goal. It is, but it made me think. Its been a long time that any idea has stuck with me for more than a week without me changing my mind. With this job I am not sitting around all day. Before I wouldn’t have any distractions and would think about during the things. This was not a good thing, especially the first month of work. My thoughts would change every five minutes. Now with other stuff going on I don’t have time to think and my thoughts don’t get a chance to change. It could be all that fluff or that fact that I’m kind of excited when I think about going to Harvard and living in Boston.

I still want distractions to keep my mind from wandering to places I would rather it didn’t. However, I don’t want to get stuck. Distractions alone aren’t really want I want. I want to be entertained, I don’t want to waste my time.

Back to the TRC … Luke fired up some helicopter game. He got 3845. He fell on the floor and didn’t get up for about 30 seconds. Travis’ record is 3866. At least, that’s what Luke said. I am doing some research for another idea of mine and quickly browsed through the emails this weekend and found that when Travis left he mentioned his helicopter record was 3844. I feel some controversy.

Friday night I went to Helium, the comedy club in Philly. Elane and I took the train and met up in the city with Lindsay, Meghann, Shaun, and Tim. I was really pumped for the show. I haven’t been to a comedy club before. I saw Seinfield and Dane Cook but both of those shows there were a couple thousand people. We got there early enough to get a close table. There was the MC, 2 comics, and the headliner: Nick Swardson. Everyone was really funny. I’d share some jokes but that would take all day. One thing I will mention, this one is for Jess, is that one of the guys asked what a Flyer was. No one had any idea. Just check out their myspace pages, they might have some funny stuff there:

One odd thing … there is a 2 item minimum in the showroom. You can choose between drinks and food. We all ordered something to drink and the waitress never came back to ask if we wanted anything else. I think we all wound up getting only 1 item and nothing was said about it. It wasn’t like we were trying to avoid it. I was starving and was pretty excited about spinach and artichoke dip.

Their upcoming schedule isn’t all that great. That really just means that none of the headliners coming are any of my favorites. If you were to go to any of the shows I’m sure it would be a great time. So go! Also, they have open mic nights each week. Maybe if I go once and realize the large majority of the people suck then I’d get up there someday.

Line of the Week
Thursday I took a 2 hour lunch to watch the USA/Ghana game at Fox & Hound with Mike. While we were there Mike said, “I can’t wait until Salsa dancing lessons are over.” It came out of nowhere and I was unaware he was even taking Salsa dancing lessons. I might have to sign up for the next round. With Jodi gone I guess Luke and I are never going to get those hip-hop dance lessons.

I was thinking the other day about sharing of candy. Just a normal type of thing that floats through my head on a daily basis. I was enjoying a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. I thought that if I was ever eating one and someone asked if they could have some, that person would no longer be my friend. There are only 2 in the package (we’re going with standard size here, a king size is a different ball game) and you can’t just eat one of them. Also the consistency of the chocolate does not make for easy breaking apart, unless you have a knife. Even then, because of my love of peanut butter cups, I would not cut one in half.

For different types of candy the answer to “Can I have some?” varies greatly. Any sort of bar candy the answer is no. They are not easy to break apart and if there is any sort of caramel then it just turns into a mess. Also if the splitting of the candy leaves any sort of finger print that’s a problem. If you happen to have a knife and fork handy and you are willing then I can understand and am willing to permit a split. A Hershey Bar is a candy bar that was made to be shared. The chocolate is already perforated. I say the standard share amount is two squares. This idea of the perforation can also apply to Twizzlers, just in that case you just share one. Kit-Kats on the other hand are not shareable in my book. I’m considering the regular packs with four. Personally I break them in half and eat two at a time. Also, I love Kit-Kats, so I may be biased.

The last sub-class is any sort of candy that comes in pieces. M&Ms, Skittles, Starburst. They’re are all perfectly suited for sharing.

I’m don’t think gum can be considered candy but I still think its worth mentioning in this conversation. Its really the opposite of all the others. If you get out a pack of gum you have to offer it to everyone else. If you are running low or there are enough people in the group to wipe out a pack then you have to somehow sneak in a piece with no one noticing. You still run the risk of someone seeing you chewing it and they may ask, “You got any gum?” Then you are done. Its just as acceptable to ask someone if they have any gum out of nowhere as it is to ask for the time. In fact, I think if you tried it out you’d have a similar success rate with getting a piece of gum and the time if you asked complete strangers. Try it.

I was thinking about going to browse a candy isle but I don’t want to cover everything. We talked about this Friday night and everyone had a lot to say about it. After I hear all your various ideas I may go out and do some more research. Then I can finish my candy thesis.

One final candy note, not related to sharing. Have you tried Kissables? The Hershey Kisses with the candy shell. I haven’t tried them yet, but I’ve seen the commercials and the concept concerns me. The point of a Kiss comes to a point. Put a hard shell on that and it could be lethal. I’ve injured myself on plain Kisses.

Follow the leader until they stray.

Apparently Peter Gammons has a CD coming out. I did some research and found that it comes out July 4th. CD Universe has the cover and track listing. Theo Epstein even has a cameo on the album. If I come across any audio I will be sure to pass it along.

Slate is running some of their best articles from their first 10 years. This one is from 2001, the author went on Paxil for a month and a half. Really interesting read.

This was a pilot for the WB (CW?) that didn’t get picked up. Some of the writers are from Scrubs and Family Guy. I’m basing sharing this link just on that fact. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. If you have the time, let me know how it is.

Analytical Puzzles – These are listed as very difficult, there are some very easy ones as well. I haven’t had time to try any but it looks like it would kill some time.

Violent British Wives – I’m curious what the numbers are in the US, I say higher.

New Futurama episodes are coming to Comedy Central. It says by 2008, which is a ways off. Still, its great news.

Saturday night I went to the Phillies game with Elane, Lindsay, and Ahad. Saturday morning I was trying to figure out something to do and realized that Kazmir was pitching for the Devil Rays. Kazmir is one of my favorite young pitchers. I was able to find some people willing to go. Of course they lost. Chutley didn’t even play, Nunez was in. I made fun of him quite a bit when the lineups were announced. Of course he homered as part of the Nunez-Fasano back-to-back homers. It was fun to go down to the stadium. Got to tell all sorts of stories and annoy Ahad a few times, that adds up to a good evening no matter where you are.

Time for a new 2 year plan. I guess since I’m a little older my goals can be longer than 1 year. Recent goals were short-term things: Semesters, Minnesota. Now its time for something a little more serious. This week’s idea is getting an MBA. I’d been considering grad school, as I may have mentioned in the early days of the Daily Email. I don’t want to get another engineering degree and am leaning more toward business. So why not go all out? I could go at night while I’m working but I am thinking a little bigger. Where should I go? I perused Forbes’ list of the top schools. My favorite so far: Harvard. Really because I’m only looking at the Top 20 and think Boston would be cool. I don’t see myself heading back to PSU and I’m not sure about Penn. Evan claims he can convince me that UF is best, we’ll see. So I guess I have to start working toward taking the GMATs and see what happens. That score would give me a better idea of how high I should shoot. I bought a study book this weekend, we’ll see where that gets me. What will the wheel of life goals land on this week?

New feature for the Monday Email: Line of the Week. Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed my friends coming up with some pretty solid lines. Some of them stand up on their own while others are amazing only to me. One issue is that I can’t always share what the line of the week is, but I can say who said it. Two weeks ago was pretty competitive. I thought Meghann had it until Saturday when Emily Housel took the crown. This week’s comes courtesy of Luke. On Thursday at Lunch to say goodbye to Jodi (she is headed to Florida for 6 months), Aju was talking about his wedding. He said during the wedding one of the groomsmen passed out. Luke asked, “Had he never seen a flying carpet before?” Before Aju’s wedding we were asking about some traditions, such as riding to the church on a horse (Aju wanted an elephant) so thats where the first idea for the magic carpet came from. If I ever have a line of the week that can be shared with the group I most certainly will. Unfortunately this week’s cannot be shared, but it was oh so hilarious.

RANDOM WORTHLESSNESS

Have you been following the media drama at Geno’s? They have a sign up that says This is America, Please Speak English. People are getting all offended by this. 6 ABC did some interviews and talked to owner who made the best point yet. If you can’t speak English the sign won’t effect you, because you can’t read it.

On ESPN 2 last week the World Dominos Championships were on everyday. I didn’t spend enough time to see how they played. I can understand people getting into dominos. My question is how do you become a dominos commentator? I don’t see when that idea would come up. If you want to be involved with competitive dominos, why not just play? Is it that competitive?

Remember the Red Paperclip guy? Since we last checked in there have been a couple more trades.

Have you ever typed your password in the login spot so you can see it (not just the *’s)? I always feel really dumb as think now everyone knows it. Of course no one is even around or looking at the screen. Just me?

What part of speech is ‘clickety-clackity’? As in “Horses are very clickety-clackity.”

Nintendo Monopoly. This one looks really sweet.

We’ve had the first Atlantic Tropical Storm. This is my best resource for all things tropical.

From what I heard of Preston & Steve this week, this was the funniest segment.

The studio where Meghann works started a blog. She even put something on it this week. So check it out.

Evan enjoyed these clips from the current.tv website. Comcast added the channel almost a month ago, I’ve only watched a few minutes so I can’t say whether I like it or not.

I’ll be just fine pretending I’m not

World Cup
I watched a few games. More soccer than I’ve ever watched on TV. Although that’s not saying much. The Sweeden/Trinadad & Tobago 0-0 match was actually really exciting. I don’t know why they could make the USA game today the later start so I could watch some of it. I’m debating DVRing it and watching when I get home. I’d probably wind up watching it at 2x speed and realize that its much more exciting that way.

ESPN2HD
I’m most excited about the World Cup starting because after many people complaining to Comcast they announced Thursday night they would be adding it on Friday. Since I’ve had HD I often don’t even check what is on ESPN2 because I just flip through the HD channels. One odd thing I noticed this morning was that Drag Racing is in HD. None of the NCAA Baseball coverage has been in HD but they manage it for Drag Racing. I can understand if they are trying to spread the HD audience but they haven’t advertised it all that much. Still waiting on ESPN Classic and ESPNU.

NCAA Baseball Super Regionals
As much as ESPN has gone down hill the past two years their college baseball coverage has been excellent. They even have regular season games on every once in a while. I’m all set for the College World Series to get started.

French Open
I jumped on the Nadal bandwagon last year during the French when he took down Federer in the semis. I don’t mind Federer, he’s very professional, he could show a little more emotion though. Its just that he is so dominant when Nadal came out of nowhere last year you couldn’t help but root for him. Even with his Capri Pants. I wound up sleeping a little later than I expected and missed the first set, which Federer won 6-1. Nadal dominated the next two sets. In the fourth set Nadal was in control until 2 balls hit the net and went Federer’s way. It looked like he was done. In the tiebreak Nadal took over again and that was it. I don’t know your feelings about tennis, but I love Grand Slam tennis.

Phillies
Who?

Arena Bowl
What?

X-Men 3
Not sports but this is the only other weekend item. Went with Lindsay and Ahad to see it on Saturday night. It was really bad. For my full review goto http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=horrible. Also with all these terrible movies out I really need to start writing a movie.

Not much else but …

If you checked my away message one day last week I had a link to Kyle Drabek’s myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/drabek. In case you were confused, he was the Phillies 1st Round Draft Pick in this year’s draft. His page is pretty interesting. The real reason I bring it up here is that Saturday Janos IM’d me this: “the picture of Talan from Laguna Beach on Drabek’s myspace page is the california surfer version of you” So head on over to the page and you will see a picture of Talan and maybe you can figure out what Janos is talking about. I’ll hold off on my opinion until his CD comes out, if it ever does.

Track someone’s relationship status. This site checks myspace and lets you know if someone’s relationship status has changed. Scary but a clever idea.
