Week in Email #2

A second full week of emails and discussion. This was the first full week of song lyrics being in the subject and the first guesses started to come in. This week there were also some new subscribers. Its possible this week I may actually start a job so I’ll have to deal with that if it comes.

Monday – The Songs You Grow to Like Never Stick at First (Fall Out Boy – Dead on Arrival)

There were only 2 Wawa chocolate milks in the LM store today. Imagine if I would have gotten in there a few minutes later. Actually don’t, its too scary to think about.

I’m not so sure the cashier in there likes me. I never have exact change in the morning and I’m always so cheery at 7am. In the afternoon though when I bother her when she is trying to restock everything she trusts me enough to let me leave my exact change on the counter (I have a quarter from the morning transaction). So I’m not sure what to think. I should probably stop.

From the Weekend:

Watched the Aristocrats. I liked it, different than I thought it would be. It wasn’t just comedians telling the same joke rapid fire. There was a little more analysis to it. If you are offended by anything then avoid this at all cost.

If those were the final episodes of Arrested Development looking at the series as a whole it would move into my all-time TV list with such greats as Get Smart, Seinfeld, and Ed.

I enjoyed CNN yesterday when they put up …

BREAKING NEWS
VP Dick Cheney shot
a man accidently while hunting.

Line breaks make all the difference.

Howard Dean compared Cheney to Aaron Burr on Face the Nation Sunday morning. Before Cheney shot the guy. The comparison wasn’t for shooting anyone, but it is now.

I watched The United States of Leland last night. I’ve had a bad string of Netflix selections but this one made up for a few bad months. I enjoyed it so much I ordered it (it was only $10). It wasn’t sci-fi at all yet reminded me a lot of Donnie Darko, probably the troubled teenager deal.

Why aren’t Twizler bags re-sealable? This drives me nuts, if you leave them out for 2 minutes they turn rock solid but the bag isn’t big enough to fold over and clip. Twizlers, along with Kit-Kats have no excess space inside their packaging. Unlike chips where half the bag is empty. While this may be good for the environment, it is not good for me.

Did you all watch the Olympics all weekend? I didn’t watch very much. I always get excited when they are coming up but don’t watch very much of it anymore, much like the X Games. I think part of it is that its not live so I already know the winners. Also its more of a show than sports. With shows I record them to watch later, which wouldn’t work at all with the Olympics. For sports there are too many sappy profiles. We’ll see what happens when we get into the good stuff, plus the fact that I won’t have much TV to watch with no NBC shows on and Love Monkey on hiatus (hopefully not gone forever). Thoughts?

**Dave had the funniest email of the week: I’m still perplexed over the commercial I saw this weekend for Papa John’s (I think…maybe it was Domino’s) new Calzones. They offer one with up to 4 “topping.” Why do they call them toppings? They are not on top…they are inside. Maybe they wanted to call them “innings,” but though people would get them confused wtih baseball.**

Tuesday – You know you do, you kill me well (Hawthorne Heights – Ohio is for Lovers)

Valentine’s Day is so emo.

Lots of contenders for this morning’s lyric. Such classics as J. Lo’s I’m Real and BNL’s One Week (btw, how is it possible everyone still remembers the lyrics to that?). Really they were just contenders, no match for the selection today.

Villanova beat UConn last night. I was out at soccer practice (I wasn’t practicing) and missed the first half. The second half was amazing, non-stop excitement. This Nova team is setting me up for a tourney heartbreaker.

Someone at the Dan Patrick Show knows what they are doing. When they come back from commercial the music is excellent. Yesterday they used Lucky Boys Confusion, Coheed & Cambria, and Fall Out Boy, and not songs that are on the radio.

This morning I’m working on our first round of trivia for the competition for new hires. I’ll share the questions in a few days. I will tell you it led to some research on ear trumpets, go ahead, look them up.

Now about his ‘holiday.’ I used to be somewhat anti-Valentine’s Day because, well, that was the thing to do. I really never had feelings either way about it, I just like choosing a side, and I’ll usually choose the side I’m on. As a holiday I guess it’s a good idea, for people who can’t take things upon themselves. Really this is something that shouldn’t be a set day and only happen once a year. But people are dumb and need to be told when to do things so they can conform with the rest of society. Right now I don’t even qualify for the holiday, so I’ll shut up.

Wednesday – You don’t know me, you don’t even care (Augustana – Boston)

Did I do anything last night? I guess after hearing about TomKat the night was a blur. **Is this going to be Nick & Jessica again, the news breaks, they claim its false, then its official a few months later?**

Big day today, I moved to a different cube. Its right next to the old one except this computer has more RAM. The other computer yelled at me yesterday when it ran out of memory, so I gave up on it. **This led to Dave referencing an adult site and having everyone’s emails the rest of the day rejected by the LM filter.**

I haven’t done a ton of research on new cars. The target date for my new vehicle is May, that’s when my sister needs my car. I’ve been looking at the Acura TSX, I haven’t gone over to test drive yet but I like all the features and my Uncle works at the dealer. I’m open to any suggestions as far as that car goes or any other you think I might like.

New Paul Shirley journal posted yesterday afternoon. Its on ESPN.com but they don’t promote it all that much so I don’t catch it all the time. Even though he is a basketball player you don’t have to even care about sports to enjoy his journals. Plus every once in a while he references Local H.

A link from a while ago, I put this on my site back in December. One of the trivia questions led me back to this one and also led to the question of what would happen if you dug through to the otherside and came to an ocean. Would the water fill the hole and stop at sea level on the other side or will the water hit a wall so to speak at the center of the Earth? I say the water would fill up to sea level making it equal on either side of the center but there was at least one dissent here. These are the types of things we discuss here with nothing to do. And believe me it gets worse than this.

My puppies demand their own monorail. Monorail? Monorail!

Seeing as Matt hasn’t gotten any of the song lyrics has anyone gotten any (without Google or even with) or care?

Thursday
– Are we getting closer, or are we just getting more lost? (Rise Against – Swing Life Away)

A few responses to my various questions yesterday so lets get to those first. I didn’t realize there were any replies until I got home, so Dave, lets behave today.

I was all set to take a look at the Volkswagens Dave had suggested and then I saw a commercial for the GTI last night. Their campaign is “Make your fast happy.” But the fast is this creepy little ball. Anyway, not so much on the hatchback. The GLI looks very cool. Automatic with steering-wheel paddles?!? Rain sensing windshield wipers?? It also looks like after I add the options I want its going to be around the same price as the TSX. Probably test drive the GLI.

Now on with the show …

If you have a different middle name than your father but same first name, are you still a Jr. or III? **Much debate on this subject at work. We determined that for Presidents you are not allowed to use Jr. if you have different middle names but for everyone else its a choice. I say its a choice even if you don’t have the same first name. You can change your name to whatever you want. Even brought up a good point about Junior Seau and if his son would be Junior Seau Jr.**

Cingular Answer Tones
I think some of the other carriers have these or are debuting them soon. The idea is that if I got an answer tone when you called me instead of you hearing the normal ring it would play a song or some other sound. I’m sort of on the fence about these. I haven’t called anyone with one so I’m not sure if its really strange to hear instead of the ring, I feel like I’d get confused or that I’d been put on hold by a friend. The other part is if you don’t like the song will you be less likely to call that person? I searched and Sugar isn’t on there, if it were I might have signed up to try it out.

If you know me you know how much I enjoy Drive-Thru Theory. You know, the study and analysis of various drive-thrus. I think Evan may have gotten me onto it with our discussions of Steak n Shake drive-thrus and how they would never work up North. It hit new highs in Minnesota when I could get Pizza Hut at a drive-thru and even Subway (I refused to use the Subway drive-thru on principal). Why do I mention this? On the way to work there is a Dunkin’ Donuts (which is strange enough, I have no idea where another one is). If you haven’t guessed, it has a drive-thru. I can see how this is convenient, I guess most people know what they want before they go in. I don’t care for donuts all that much so I’d need to give them a good looking over. My issue is, prove to me that you can get out of your car and through the front door of the donut shop before I sell you any donuts. I thought of this in the morning yesterday then in the afternoon Valerie wondered aloud in her email, why don’t Starbucks have drive-thrus? Another excellent question. One final question, how do you write drive-thru? I’m going with drive-thru but I’m not sure if that is correct or if I’m just used to the record label. **Kelli says she’s seen Starbucks drive-thrus.**

Penn State basketball beat Indiana! The Sixers beat the Spurs! And I barely watched either. I was watching the Olympics. That’s right, the first time I’ve paid attention for more than a few minutes. The reason is simple, sports I enjoy watching. Moguls, short track speed skating, and downhill. I’ve been watching for short periods but then Bob Costas shows up and I know things aren’t going to head my way, he tosses it to figure skating and I’m out.

Jeeves is retiring.
My question is, can you even have the site without Jeeves? I stopped going there with any regularity a while back but I would still stop in on occasion to say hi to Jeeves. I guess he wanted too much money.

Pitchers and Catchers. These could have been the only 3 words in this email and it would have been the best email yet.

Friday – Oooooookaaaaaaaay!!! (Usher – Yeah)

Tough, tough lyrics decision for me this morning. They all had their merits and may be used in the future so I don’t want to give anything away. If you want to feel special, you can email your guess, email just to me not the group. **I picked the one I did because of the Blue Band and Penn State Football. If you attended a game with Matt and I then you should remember this well.**

The Junior issue was debated until the janitor cleared things up. However my Mom reminded me that my Uncle and Grandfather have different middle names and she claimed that it wasn’t legal to use Jr with a different middle name. To that I say someone could technically add Jr. to the end of their name just because the feel like it.

Also there was plenty of Saved by the Bell trivia yesterday. I’m no good since I stopped watching the show when I was in 5th grade. It didn’t age well for me, I have other examples but I fear to mention them. Anyway, Chris here is a professional so if you feel like trying to stump him you can send me some questions.

Some Thoughts …

No matter how bad a day you’re having if you hear Real McCoy – Another Night on the radio it will make everything better.

Pitchers & Catchers reported yesterday as I mentioned. On the way home from work I heard Boys of Summer on the radio (of course it was The Ataris version, it will have to do). Even though the wind chill is likely to be below 0 this weekend its Spring to me. Sort of like when my Mom gets excited when she sees her first robin in the Spring I get excited to hear Boys of Summer and seeing pitchers doing bunting drills.

For Black History Month the Simon Gratz HS Jazz Band played during lunch yesterday. Their conductor was awesome. I realized I am no where near cool enough to be a conductor of a Jazz band. You have to be able to bob your head properly and wander around on stage like you don’t really need to be there and snapping your fingers when appropiate. But every once in a while BAM give someone their cue and the whole place goes nuts.

Last night I flipped on the Olympics only to find men’s figure skating was on, so I popped in a DVD. Evan called a little while later asking what was currently on the Olympics because, “We don’t want to be the guys in the bar that turn on men’s figure skating.” Fair point. Turns out figure skating wasn’t on right then, it was Snowboard Cross, I was on board. I didn’t even know this was an event at the Olympics, this is the first year. I have a few issues however. Pick a name for the event! Snowboard cross is what the announcers called it and I’m assuming this is the ‘official’ Olympic name. Problem is its too close to SnoCross, which as you know, is snowmobile racing. The boarders all called it Boarder Cross, which is better. In Winter X its Boarder X, my favorite. It was all over the map. Also, there is no Ski Cross, or Skier X in the Olympics. They really should have both.
